...and there goes the summer...

I did spend some time at the gym this summer, albeit not nearly as much as I should have.  Now that it's back to school time (ok, that was like a month ago), getting into another set of routines has been a difficult transition for me.

Over the summer the company my husband works for was bought out by another, bigger company.  The nice thing is that in the buy out deal, they took him too.  He's got a guaranteed job with the new company, and that's great.  It means that things at home change, though.  New job is farther away than old job.  New job allows him to bring home the "work van" - which is great because it saves us on gas and vehicle wear and tear and it means that he can leave from home and start working immediately instead of heading to the office first.  But it's still a new transition for everyone.

School is back in session which means my time off from work can be spent in peaceful sleep instead of having to put in earplugs.  It means adjusting to new timeframes for things like chores and getting to the gym, though.  It means theres a "bedtime" again for the kiddo.  Which means, another transition for everyone.

At my work, the overtime that was once banned has been reinstated.  This means that I can work some 12 hour shifts (4 hours of which is paid at time and a half!).  I pay a TON in health insurance so I need what OT I can get.  But that's another, you guessed it, transition!  Also, it's virtually impossible to go to the gym on the 12 hour days because I wake up at like 3:30-4:00, shower, get a load of laundry with my work uniform in it done, maybe eat some "dinner" (if you can call a cold hot dog from the fridge as I'm running out the door "dinner") and throw something together for me to eat later at night at work, try to keep the kid on task with his chores, and attempt to spend 5 minutes with the family all before getting to work by 7pm!

All this transitioning means that timeframes get shuffled about and the gym gets neglected.  That's bad because I have a wedding that I'm going to be in next July and I don't want to be the fattest bridesmaid in the group.  :(  I guess I better step up my game...

Monday...Monday... (Read that as if the Mamas and the Papas are singing it to you)

After a couple months of busy-ness, end of the school year-ness, and some general laziness the boy and I finally went back to the YMCA gym again. I did 35 minutes on the elliptical and went approximately 2.2 miles while the boy played basketball against himself in the gym. It's days later and I'm still feeling the effects. :(  The first batch of symptoms I felt I initially brushed off as related to sitting for a long period at work - my lower back and upper buttock muscles were sore. It didn't occur to me until later that it could be related to using the machine. The next set of symptoms manifested themselves today (fortunately I have recovered from the previous set of symptoms). This is strange because the front thigh muscles of only my left leg are now sore. Which is why I'm not sure that this new developments is related at all. I say this for two reasons 1. It's only the one leg and 2. While I was at work on Monday night/Tuesday morning I had a patient attempt to get out of bed unassisted and I had to hoist him back into bed using nearly all the strength I had and I'm thinking this muscle group is sore from the lift. I can't say for certain though. Anyway, it was nice to get back to the gym. Now to carve out the time to do it on a regular basis (aka get back into a routine and stop being lazy!).

For shame!

It's been super difficult to get to the gym lately, so super busy!  Between graduations, weddings, birthdays, you name it, I'm doing it. Andrew and I did participate in Run or Dye again and I'll post pictures soon, so at least we did that...

It's a start... and setback

Andrew and I began working out again in prep for Run or Dye in early May but the weather decided to put a wrench into our progress.  It's hard enough to work out when our schedules are so crazy - me working midnights and my Wednesday class (and all it's homework!), him with his Tuesday guitar lesson and Wednesday choir practice...  Someone make it all stop!!!  Thank you Mother Nature and Old Man Winter - Wednesday saw 7 inches of snow fall, starting at 4 AM and ending some time in the afternoon.  Pretty much NOTHING happened that day!  I'm not sure how much working out is going to happen until I finish this HUGE project I have to have for school.  At any rate, blog updates will not be happening any time soon, sorry...

Run or Dye 2013

I was going through my pictures and organizing them when I came across my Run or Dye shots from last September.  Since I just paid, today, for myself and Andrew to participate in May, I thought I'd share last year's pictures.
A bright & sunny September day!  Perfect for a 5K.
We managed to find our friend Lynn among the thousands
of people participating!  What are the odds??

Time for a little Dye action!
A pre-run hug starts things off perfectly!
We are SUPER excited to be participating!
Runners were sent out in waves, to keep those in line from
getting bored they played music and we danced.
From the grandstands, the line of runners to the left...
...and to the right!
And we're off!!!
Whew!  We made it!!!  Run or Dye is MESSY!!!
My knees and shoes even got dirty!
So did Andrew's!
My sunglasses couldn't even escape the carnage!
The dye stations really pelt you well!
Hey Andrew, I think you have something in your hair...
So this is what I'd look like with polka dot hair!
Is blue a good color for me?

I'm gonna wash that dye right outta my hair!

Dye even got into my ears!
Swag and super dyed run shirts!  Dye even got into my
shirt and onto my underwear!  Craziness!!

The backside of our run shirts.  We're dying to do it again!

Run or Dye 2014

Andrew and I have decided to run the 5K Run or Dye again this year.  It's in May so we don't have a lot of time to train.  Thankfully the hellish winter seems to be breaking which means we aren't too afraid to venture into the outdoors to head over to the Y to start getting back into shape.  I'm thinking we'll start tomorrow, maybe.  But it has to be soon!  Thankfully, I still have Couch to 5K on my phone so I can use that.  Time to get back in shape...

As I typed this I wondered, will Andrew's school participate in the Martian Marathon again this year???

Polar Vortex Anyone

This winter has been B-R-U-T-A-L!  Windchills in the -30 range, snowfalls in the 4+ inches range nearly every time it snows, it's been insane!  Needless to say I haven't been leaving the house except to go to work and school.  I can't bring myself to drive over to the Y to work out.  Not to mention that for the last week or two my right shoulder has been sore/bothering me.  I've been attributing it to carrying around my brick of a laptop and books for school, but is it maybe something else?  On the other hand, I have been using a new food tracker app for my phone and keeping an eye on the scale in the bathroom and that's been helping to lead me to a thinner me.  That and shoveling snow... maybe that's part of my shoulder pain too?  Hopefully the weather will break soon (I'm SOOOOO over winter!!) and I'll get back to the workout regimen.  I refuse to be a fatty for my brother's upcoming wedding (whenever they set a date, that is!).
